Product features

Level: A1+

Purpose: Speaking / Grammar

Players: 2-6

The transition from ‘am’, ‘is’ and ‘are’ to ‘was’ and ‘were’ is an important step in learning English. Children begin to talk not only about what is happening now, but also about what happened before: where someone was, what they were like, or whether something was interesting, difficult, funny or important.

BAFFLE ME KIDS – TO BE IN THE PAST helps children get to understand these forms naturally — through playing with colourful stripes and circles, quick questions, answers and friendly competition. Instead of learning the table by heart, children use ‘was’ and ‘were’ in practice, in short, engaging communication scenarios.

The game encourages fluent question-asking and quick responses in English. Children listen to other players, analyse the questions, choose the correct form and try to answer correctly before their opponent does. As a result, learning isn’t associated with stress, but with action, excitement and the satisfaction of getting answers right.

In the BAFFLE ME variant, players compete against each other by asking questions at a rapid pace to provoke an incorrect answer and eliminate their opponent from the game. In the ASK ME variant, the task is to create questions that match the answers shown on the circles. Each round helps to reinforce the use of ‘was’ and ‘were’ in questions, answers and simple dialogues.

BAFFLE ME KIDS – TO BE IN THE PAST is ideal for use in classes with children, private tuition, language school lessons, at home with a parent, or as a group game for children learning English.

It’s a great way to help your child start talking about the past in English with more confidence, more naturally and without getting bored. Here, grammar isn’t a chore — it becomes part of the fun, the conversation and some healthy competition.

Language benefits

Using ‘was’ and ‘were’ with ease – Children practise the verb ‘to be’ in the past tense through questions and answers, which helps them to talk more easily about where someone was, what they were like, what happened and what situations were like in the past.
Greater fluency in speaking English – Regularly practising sentence structures through games helps children respond more and more quickly, confidently and naturally, without having to think too long about each form.
Developing active listening skills – To score a point and respond appropriately, a child has to understand the question, pick out the key information and choose the correct answer.
Building more complete and correct sentences – The game encourages children to form meaningful questions and answers using ‘was’ and ‘were’, which helps to improve their grammatical accuracy, logical thinking and confidence in simple conversations.
