The second conditional opens the door to some really interesting conversations in English. It allows you to talk about what would happen if the world were different, if someone had made a different decision, had an extraordinary opportunity, or found themselves in a completely unusual situation.

The problem is that the second conditional is often reduced to a tedious formula: ‘If + Past Simple, would + verb’. Learners understand the rule, but are not always able to use it fluently in conversation, questions, stories or amusing hypothetical situations.

WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF…? helps to practise this structure in a natural, creative and engaging way. Participants match sentence parts, create stories, ask questions and imagine what might happen in various situations. As a result, the Second Conditional ceases to be merely a grammatical rule and begins to function in real-life communication.

The set combines several game variations, including Black Peter, Chain Stories, Shower of Questions and What Would Happen If…?. Each of these develops a different aspect of the language: logically linking sentences, constructing utterances, asking questions, telling stories and responding to other participants’ ideas.

The game is ideal for lessons, private tuition, language schools, at home, in pairs, in groups or for independent revision. It’s a brilliant solution for those who want not only to ‘know’ the second conditional, but to really start using it in speaking and writing.

WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF…? turns grammar into a space for imagination. Instead of yet more predictable sentences from a textbook, there are questions, stories, ideas and surprising answers — in other words, exactly what brings English to life.

Language benefits

Effective practice of the Second Conditional – Participants practise constructions such as ‘If I were…’, ‘If I had…’ and ‘I would…’, which helps them to better understand how to speak in English about hypothetical situations, dreams, choices and imagined consequences.
Logical construction of conditional sentences – Matching sentence parts requires analysing the context, illustrations and meaning of the statement, which helps to better understand the relationship between the condition and the possible consequence.
Creating coherent stories in English – The ‘Chain Stories’ approach develops the ability to construct logical, creative narratives using the second conditional, turning grammar into a tool for storytelling rather than just a rule to be memorised.
Opportunity for self-study and active revision – The cards can be used as flashcards, allowing you to practise structures on your own, consolidate what you’ve learnt at your own pace, and better prepare for a conversation or a game with others
